Christmas at Shakespeare's Birthplace

This winter at Shakespeare's Birthplace we are preparing for Christmas with floral displays and a glass of Wassail. Are you as excited as we are?

Over Throne
26 Oct - 1 December
Losing your head in the run up to Christmas?
So many of Shakespeare's rulers have ended up losing their throne, their crown, or even their lives! This winter as you travel through Shakespeare's Birthplace, you will learn the stories behind some of Shakespeare's most famous ousted monarchs; Caeser, Cleopatra and Richard III to name a few! We invite you to take a seat on our throne and ponder whether you would make a good leader, or if you too will end up Over Throne!
Plus, don't miss our special Over Throne and After Hours Talk on 9 November at 5.30pm.

Meet the experts
11 November, 9 December, 12-4pm
A rare opportunity to chat with members of our Collections Team in the Swan and Maidenhead Inn and see items from our world renowned collection, not often on display to the public.

Mary Arden: Town and Country - Preparing for Christmas
25 & 30 November, 12-4pm, Marble Hall on site at Shakespeare's Birthplace
Meet Emily and Sam, our House Stewards from Shakespeare’s Birthplace and Mary Arden’s Farm, to hear about how life would have changed for Mary Arden moving from the country to the town upon her marriage to John Shakespeare. Hear how preparations for Christmas would have been both similar and different between town and country. John Shakespeare was known as a bit of rogue about town, but did he keep Christmas well?

Flowers of Winter
14 December 2019 – 5 January 2020, all day
See Shakespeare’s Birthplace filled with floral displays, inspired by traditional winter blooms. Stunning floral displays by local designers (March Hare Floral Design and Tuckshop Flowers) will fill the house this Christmas season, inspired by the traditional laying of flowers to symbolise the downing of tools, and the beginning of celebrations. Did you know that in the Tudor period houses were not decorated until Christmas Eve and that the 40 days before Christmas were times of fasting and prayer? Come and find out more about these traditions and discover something new this Christmas.

Come A-Wassailing at Shakespeare’s Birthplace
30 December 2019 - 1 January 2020, Marble Hall, 11am – 3pm
A crucial part of Christmas, New Year and Twelfth Night celebrations in the 16th century, Wassailing was the precursor to our modern day carolling, and included the delicious spiced drink of 'Wassail'. Come along to Shakespeare’s Birthplace to learn, smell and taste what it was like to go Wassailing in Tudor England.

Activities are included in general admission so if you already have a valid pass you can come along for free!
